How to Strip & Tip at Spas

About Spas Spas | Why Spa | Picking | Value | Costs | Etiquette | Stripping
If you are considering a spa vacation, you may be wondering about the rules for stripping and tipping in a spa atmosphere. Luckily, the rules are fairly universal, so you don’t have to worry about doing the right or wrong thing if you know what to expect before going in.

The goal of any spa vacation is to enjoy yourself and relax, so make sure that you read the following stripping and tipping suggestions before you climb onto that first massage table so that your mind will be on the treatments, and not on wondering what you are supposed to do.

Make an Appointment

Make an appointment rather than just walking in. Good spa therapists are busy, and it is highly unlikely that you will be able to just walk in a secure an appointment. You should call ahead and set a date and time for your treatment.

Preview the Spa Treatments

Talk to the service coordinator at your spa to find out which treatment and/or therapist is right for you. For example, there are many different types of massages, and it’s vital that you understand which one will give you the most enjoyment.

Deep muscle massage may hurt if you are sensitive, and others may be so light you may walk away feeling as if you didn’t receive a real treatment.

Arrive Early & Get Undressed

Arrive about 15 minutes before your treatment time because you’ll need time to change into your robe or towel. Being late will only cause problems because the therapist will have to stay on schedule in order to give the next client their full treatment time.

For example, if you arrive 20 minutes late for a 50 minute massage, your treatment will only be 30 minutes, minus the time it takes you to change and prepare.

Choose Your Spa Therapist

Some people would be comfortable with either a male or female therapist, but if receiving a treatment from the opposite sex makes you uncomfortable, then you definitely have the right to choose. However, it’s important to remember that the therapists are trained to be professional at all times, and will take the necessary precautions to insure your privacy.

Disrobing is Up to You

The utmost question on many people’s minds is whether or not they will have to completely disrobe for their treatment. The answer is that it is entirely up to you. Although most people do, the therapist will understand if you are not comfortable with it.

Keep in mind that during the massage, or most other treatments, you will be draped with a towel except for the section of your body that the therapist is working on. If this is an issue for you, be sure to ask whether or not this is an option for the particular type of treatment that you are booking.

Plan on a Tip

You should plan to leave a 15-30 percent for your treatment, in addition to the cost of the treatment. For instance, if you were paying $100 for a body wrap, then your total bill would be about $125.00. These can add up quickly if you are staying at a spa and plan to enjoy a few treatments, so be sure to include the tips into your budget.
